Il-86 Camber
|
The Ilyushin Il-86 was the first wide-body commercial aircraft built in the Sovjet Union, comparable in size to the three engined McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Lockheed L-1011 in the US and the Airbus A300 twinjet in Western Europe. Due to the lack of high by-pass ratio engines - such as the engines used on the above-mentioned aircraft - in the USSR, Ilyushin choose a four engined layout for the Il-86. The rather high fuel consumption of the Il-86 paired with the limited range and performance presents a major obstacle to the types’ commercial success. During the Sovjet aera, no other airlines than Aeroflot operated the type, although exports to some of the Warsaw Pact countries were expected by the early 1990s. These plans became obsolete after the political changes of 1989/1990. The Il-86, of which some 120 units were built to date, is still used by airlines of the CIS only. Thanks to their capacity and baggage storage capabilities, most Il-86 remain in service on high density routes and charter flights. |
